Kathi Weeks: Vortrag »Down With Love. Feminist Critique and the New Ideologies of Work« // 09. Mai 2017 // 16:15 //
Michael Hardt: Vortrag »Where Have All the Leaders Gone?« 09. Mai 2017 // 18:15 //

In her most recent book, Undoing the Demos the political theorist Wendy Brown argues that basic elements of democracy are becoming undone through "a particular neoliberal form of reason that configures all aspects of existence in economic terms." She writes, "neoliberal reason, ubiquitous today in statecraft and the workplace, in jurisprudence, education, culture, and a vast range of quotidian activity, is converting the distinctly political  character, meaning, and operation of democracy's constituent elements into economic ones. Liberal democratic institutions, practices, and habits may not survive this conversion. Radical democratic dreams might not either."

In this workshop with Kathi Weeks and Michael Hardt, we will examine two chapters from Brown's book in order to begin considering the present global political moment. The workshop will also provide an opportunity to further discuss some of the issues and problems posed by Weeks and Hardt in the lectures they will each have delivered the previous evening. If you would like to participate in the workshop, please let us know by Friday, 21 April:

Participants in the workshop are invited to read, and come prepared to discuss:

  • Brown, Wendy (2015) "Chapter One - Undoing Democracy: Neoliberalism's Remaking of State and Subject", in: Undoing the Demos: Neoliberalism's Stealth Revolution (New York: Zone Books) pp.17-45.
  • Brown, Wendy (2015) "Epiloge - Losing Bare Democracy and the Inversion of Freedom into Sacrifice", in: Undoing the Demos: Neoliberalism's Stealth Revolution (New York: Zone Books) pp.201-222.
