The New York artist Swoon studied painting at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. As early as 1999 she became known for her characteristic paper cut-outs that she affixes to all kinds of walls in metropolitan areas the world over. Her finely detailed works usually depict people, sometimes representing unfamiliar passersby, sometimes people from the artist’s immediate living environment. On paper, and later on masonry, Swoon designs scenes that appear realistic, through which she depicts life in the city, holding a mirror up to the urban world – and also, to a certain extent, creating her very own Lebenswelt that spans buildings and walls. Swoon herself characterizes her street works as an X-ray of the city that is ultimately reflected back into urban space.
In addition to her works of paper, the New Yorker – who is, by the way, a member of the Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative and also cofounder of the artists’ group Miss Rockaway Armada – also creates oversized interior installations and has started working with other materials like wood, which are exhibited in prestigious museums such as the MoMA or the Brooklyn Museum, at art fairs like the Art Basel Miami, or in various Deitch projects.
