Berlin artist Tryone started graffiti writing in 1989 and today counts among the most well-known members of the Berlin graffiti scene. Steel wall, public transportation, canvas, sketchbook, or brick wall – any or all of these surfaces become sites for his art in public space, which he proliferates not only in his hometown but also nationally and internationally, attracting attention to himself.Tryone has participated in numerous relevant and prestigious group exhibitions and projects (e.g. Backjumps – The Live Issue) and has held lectures and workshops, all the while remaining dedicated to the first medium with which he made art: the street. His graffiti roots and experience base as tagger and writer still remain distinctively present in his works today. Yet Tryone has always been aiming for more than just inscribing one’s own name as often as possible in very prominent places. Indeed, Tryone works conceptually, as is for instance evident is his collaboration with DTagno under the title We are not the monkeys in your horde!, in which both artists – dressed in gorilla costumes – set out to explore the thematic constellations of human and animal instincts, compulsiveness, and obsessive imbuing of meaning through a live painting performance.
