The Leuphana Semester: in the Midst of ScienceTHE LEUPHANA SEMESTER:
IN THE MIDST OF SCIENCE

The Leuphana Semester starts with the Kick-off Week for all first semester students. Working together as a team, first semester students get involved with a broadly conceived project and develop solutions to issues that make our society a place worth living in.

The Kick-off Week gives first semester students the opportunity to meet fellow students, to explore the campus, and to become acquainted with life and work at university.
Furthermore, tutors and other members of Leuphana University are on hand to offer guidance and assistance along the way.

During the Leuphana Semester students will learn how to apply quantitative and qualitative methods and will acquire philosophically grounded knowledge of history and an ethically motivated sense of responsibility.

The courses offered during the Leuphana Semester are grouped into four thematic learning units—the so-called modules. The modules are as follo

  • Science and History
  • Science and Methods
  • Sciences and Disciplinary Boundaries
  • Science and Responsibility

In the lectures, tutorials and seminars of the modules students concentrate on the foundations of academic thinking, familiarize themselves with current research methods and get into their main subject area.

Final highlight of the Leuphana Semester is a scholarly conference. This conference will be organized and carried out by the students themselves within the scope of the “Science and Responsibility” module. The scholarly conference thereby gives students the opportunity to immediately put into practice what they have learned during the Leuphana Semester.
