Module - Science uses methodsMODULE - SCIENCE USES
METHODS

In the first seven weeks, the module "Science uses Methods" covers the interdisciplinary methods that the sciences use to gather data and information as well as measure findings.  The module is divided into the field of research methods, statistics and mathematics.  After consulting their major advisors, students may choose two of these three areas, though it is recommended that they attend all three subject fields in order to acquire a comprehensive education in the foundations of methodology.

The courses in the methods module meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  In lectures and advanced seminars or  tutorials students will work on the methods of empirical research, statistics and mathematics.  The knowledge acquired and the first methodological research skills can be applied in the modules "Responsibility in Science" and "Knowledge makes History" –they also serve as the basis for work in the comprehensive studies (Komplementärstudium) which begins in the second semester. The module "Science uses Methods" consists of four credit hours which will can be completed in half a semester.  The course offerings will be structured differently in the various fields.

The field, research methods, offers a two hour lecture and approximately 30 accompanying seminars.  In addition, individual support will be provided by tutors through the internet platform Moodle.  Students in mathematics will attend a four hour lecture with integrated tutorials.  They will also have support though the tutorial internet platform.  Students may attend office hours for additional advising.  Students in statistics will attend a two hour lecture with an accompanying two hour tutorial.

The seminar offerings in research methods I, research methods II, statistics as well as mathematics are exemplary of the wide range of topics covered in the module "Science uses methods."
