Teacher Training for Primary and Secondary SchoolsTEACHER TRAINING FOR PRIMARY
AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS

The two-semester Master's degree for teaching in primary and secondary schools is organized around building competence in the various instructional subjects, as well as in the educational sciences generally.

Content and Idea

The consecutive M. Ed. for teaching in primary and secondary schools offers graduates with a major in a relevant field the possibility to systematically further expand their academic knowledge in their subject, while enhancing their professional orientation. The two-semester program follows the European system of Bachelor and Master's degrees as defined by the Bologna process, and also meets the specific guidelines for teacher training established by the state of Lower Saxony and the conference of cultural affairs ministers.

Course Structure

Students in the M. Ed. degree for teaching professionals in primary and secondary schools study the two instructional subjects that they had already chosen as part of their Bachelor degree while also developing their professional knowledge in the educational sciences.

The following instructional subjects are available for study:

  • German
  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Protestant religion
  • Art
  • Music
  • Politics
  • Social Studies
  • Physical Education

Practical internships are integrated into the curriculum. The modules Diagnostics and Psychology of Change in the School System in the first semester and School Development in the second semester offer interdisciplinary topics central to the professionalization of future teachers. The Leuphana degree program expands and systemizes the specific scientific, didactic and educational knowledge and skills that students acquired in their previous Bachelor studies.

Prospects

The successful completion of the Master’s degree entitles students to be admitted into their preparatory service for teacher certification in primary and secondary schools in conjunction with their career qualification for secondary level I. With the completion of a academic Master’s degree, students may pursue teaching responsibilities in continuing education as well as in universities of applied sciences.

Upon completion of the degree program students receive the Master of Education (M.Ed.).

Aspirants

The consecutive Master’s degree for teaching in primary and secondary schools is directed towards graduates who have completed a related Bachelor’s degree.  To be admitted to the Master’s program students must have Bachelor’s grade point average of at least 2.5. Admission to the Master’s program with an average grade of more than 2.6 is permitted, on a case-by-case basis,  if the applicant can demonstrate the successful completion of a Bachelor module (a maximum of 15 credits) with a final grade of “good” or “very good.”
