Managment & Financial Institutions

The major in Management & Financial Institutions focuses on areas of activity in banking and insurance as well as on areas related to corporate finance. This program of study prepares students for managerial functions or positions as strategically operating specialists who support the corporate management or who are responsible for specialist subjects in the above-mentioned institutions. This major is marked by practical relevance, specialist knowledge, and the acquisition of leadership skills.
Content and Idea
Apart from its focus on institutional aspects, the Management major is characterised by its interdisciplinary approach: the program closely interconnects the spheres of business economics, macroeconomics, and law. Various accompanying modules provide additional leadership and social skills. In particular, there is a wide variety of optional courses in which students work together in small teams and seminars.
Highly qualified full-time professors in this major as well as selected practitioners from the field of financial institutions impart their specialist knowledge to students. Cooperations with well-established banks, insurance companies, and other corporations ensure the program’s practical relevance.
Structure
Besides the interdisciplinary content of the Financial Markets bridging module, the first semester imparts central aspects in the field of corporate finance, insurance industry and law, and monetary economics. In the second semester, the content of these mandatory modules is complemented by professional competence in banking and credit law. During the third semester, students can deepen their methodological competence in finance by specializing either in risk management or asset management.
Additionally, students have the opportunity to deepen and extend their knowledge by choosing either major-specific or cross-disciplinary electives in the second and third semester. In the field of financial institutions, the following subjects are offered: bank management; corporate governance; international law of capital markets; international accounting; investor relations & capital markets; liability, risk and insurance; and insurance management. Within the scope of a challenging research project, students work in a team to address questions of practical relevance that can be looked at from an either disciplinary or interdisciplinary perspective.
From the first to the third semester, students complete, apart from the modules in their major, additional modules as follows: In the field of Management Studies, students further deepen their specialist skills in management by completing a total of three modules; the cross-disciplinary Complementary Studies program, also comprising three modules, provides students with the general academic foundations reflecting on science. In the final semester, students write their master’s thesis and attend the accompanying Master's Forum.
Prospects
The Management & Financial Institutions major prepares students for analytical and conceptual, consulting, and strategic functions in banking, insurance, and corporate finance. According to a Leuphana market study, Leuphana graduates will find a wide range of career paths open to them: on the one hand as a specialist in investment or corporate banking or as an underwriter for direct insurers or reinsurers, and on the other hand staff functions in the field of financial or risk management in corporate head offices. Business consulting firms and consulting-related departments of major auditing companies also offer equivalent career options.
Apart from positions in private enterprise, this program of study also offers the opportunity for further development in the field of science: methodical seminars and a research project help students prepare for careers in the academic field. The Fast Track program gives qualified students the opportunity to attend selected doctoral courses already during the second semester of their master’s studies. The departments involved in the major run numerous respective research projects.
Upon completion of the graduate program of study, students are awarded the Master of Arts (M.A.).
