Who will be admitted to a consecutive master’s program?

The master’s program is targeted primarily at students with a bachelor’s degree who have above-average skills and ambition and who are seeking an advanced academic qualification allowing them to pursue a doctorate degree and a professional career. It is important that prospective candidates have completed their first degree with a good grade point average and that they have studied a subject that is related to the intended master’s program. In addition, all candidates must demonstrate good English language skills. As regards the Master’s Program in Education, special rules apply. For full information on the application procedure and the admission requirements, please visit the application page.

The Student Counselling Service at Graduate School serves as a first point of contact for all prospective graduate students and helps them choose the right master’s degree program.

Can I apply for admission if I have a foreign degree?

Graduates holding a foreign degree that is equivalent to the German bachelor’s degree can also be admitted to the consecutive master’s program. Equivalence of the degree is determined on the basis of the proposals for assessment submitted by the Central Office for Foreign Education at the Permanent Secretariat of the German Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs.

In addition to demonstrating the required knowledge of the English language, foreign applicants must also prove equivalent German language skills. For full information on the application procedure for international students, please click here.

Are my undergraduate studies suitable for any particular master’s program?

You can best determine suitability of your undergraduate studies to a particular master’s program by referring to the list of consecutive disciplines. Here you can find the number of ECTS credit points needed in specific subjects of the undergraduate program of study in order to be admitted to the respective master’s program. The list is available in the download section of The Application/Master’s/Admissions Requirements page.

The Student Counselling Service at Graduate School serves as a first point of contact for all prospective graduate students and helps them choose the right master’s degree program.

Can I apply for admission if I have not yet fully completed my first degree?

Yes, you can. In general, you must have fulfilled 81% of the course requirements (in the case of a three-year bachelor’s program, this corresponds to 145 ECTS credit points). Your academic performance must have been graded and officially certified (by the Examination Office of the respective university). The grade point average (GPA) must be equal to or higher than the minimum grade for admission. If your final GPA is below the minimum grade required for admission, acceptance into your chosen master’s program will not be revoked. However, the undergraduate degree certificate must have been submitted by the start of the winter semester (first week of October).

Where can I take the required English test?

English language skills required for admission to the consecutive master's programs (except for the Teacher Training program) can be demonstrated in different ways:

  • You can take the TOEFL test in the Internet-based or paper-based version at various testing centers, for example in German cities like Hamburg or Hanover. The IELTS test is conducted by the British Council and the Carl Duisberg Center once or twice a month at 10 locations in Germany.
  • Preparatory courses and exams for the Cambridge Advanced Certificate (CAE) are offered in Lower Saxony by, among others, adult education centers.
  • You can take the TOEIC test at several locations, including the Leuphana Foreign Language Center.

Can I apply with a FH bachelor?

Yes, you can. A bachelor’s degree from a University of Applied Sciences (FH) in the respective discipline formally qualifies you to apply for admission to our master’s programs.

Can I apply as a graduate from a university of cooperative education?

Applicants holding an accredited bachelor’s degree from a university of cooperative education fulfill the formal requirements for admission (see the resolution adopted by the German Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs on 15 October 2004 regarding the classification of bachelor’s degrees taken at universities of cooperative education within the consecutive degree structure). All other applicants from universities of cooperative education who have not yet changed to a bachelor’s degree or whose bachelor’s degree has not yet been accredited, do not fulfill the formal requirements for admission to our consecutive master’s programs. Proof of accreditation of the bachelor’s degree (confirmation by the university of cooperative education) must be submitted by the applicant.
