Questions about the application process

What documents do I have to submit to demonstrate that I have fulfilled the prerequisite of having earned 15 credit points in the areas of philosophy of science, ethics, practice and/or research methods in initial undergraduate studies?
In the The application/The Ph.D download section you will find a form that specifically addresses this issue and contains a list of examples.
During your previous studies, particularly if you completed a master’s, a Magister, or other similar advanced degree program, you most likely enrolled in modules and lectures in the areas of statistics, data analyses (for example SPSS), interdisciplinary or subject-specific methods, philosophy of science, philosophy, laboratory techniques, experiments or similar subjects. However, in many cases the modules completed by you will have had different titles. The Doctoral Committee will examine your documents to determine whether or not you have achieved the prescribed scholarly accomplishments. It would therefore be helpful if you could highlight and list separately in your application (whether in your transcript or in your credentials) those modules and contents that you think fulfill the prerequisites specified above.
What shall I do if I can’t (or can only partially) demonstrate that I have fulfilled the prerequisite of having earned 15 credit points in the areas of history of science, ethics, practice and/or research methods in initial undergraduate studies?
In this case, you can either enroll in the Complementary Studies module of one of the master’s programs at Graduate School you still need to complete while working on your doctoral thesis, or enroll in a module offered by another university and have this module approved by the Doctoral Committee. If you opt for a Complementary Studies module, you will have to pay the required auditing and examination fees. You must demonstrate that you have fulfilled the prerequisites by the end of the second semester by submitting the relevant documents to the Admissions Office. If you fail to submit these documents by the prescribed deadline, you will be exmatriculated.
I completed a bachelor’s degree and a master’s program. Can I still be admitted to the doctoral program?
Yes, you can, if you have achieved a total of 300 ECTS credit points in the two programs. This is generally the case if the bachelor’s degree is finished in a three-year program (180 credit points, full-time study) and the subsequent master’s degree is achieved in a two-year program (120 credit points, full-time study). Please also note that the final grade of your master’s degree must meet the criteria set forth above.
What does it mean to graduate “with distinction”?
The Doctoral Committee determines the final grade in accordance with your chosen discipline. In general, the term “with distinction“ means that your specific project, that is your specific field of study is awarded a final grade of 2.5 or higher. Exceptions include the state examination in law, where by tradition grades are awarded according to a different grade scale. If you have any further questions, please contact your Doctoral Committee.
Is it possible to pursue a doctoral degree with a degree from a University of Applied Sciences (FH)?
Yes, it is. However, you should bear in mind that the fields of philosophy of science, ethics, practice and/or research methods are often not taught at a University of Applied Sciences. This is why you should principally assume that in accordance with § 4 Article 2b) of the Doctoral Regulations you have to make up for these 15 credit points by the end of the second semester of your doctoral studies in order to avoid being exmatriculated.
