Influence of Participatory Structures on the Implementation of Social Standards.
An Empirical Study of Chinese Textile Factories
Short Description:
For almost two decades, companies have been attacked by non-governmental organisations to improve labour conditions in the worldwide production of their goods. Many brands have therefore set up monitoring programs to ensure compliance with social standards at supplier level. In contrast, on-going reports about violation of social standards show that monitoring has not had the expected positive effects. Therefore, latest compliance programs follow a different strategy by promoting participation of workers to foster the improvement of labour conditions.
The research interest of this doctoral dissertation is to investigate how employee participation influences the implementation of social standards in Chinese textile suppliers. Seven suppliers in China which took part in the pilot project ‘Worldwide Enhancement of Social Quality’ of Tchibo GmbH and GTZ are analysed in an empirical case study.
