Born in 1955, Martin Warnke studied mathematics and physics at FU Berlin and at Hamburg University. He graduated in theoretical physics and started work at Lüneburg University, where he did his Habilitation in 2008. By this he acquired the venia legendi for computer science and digital media. Until 2010 he was chair of the Computer and Media Centre of the Leuphana University Lüneburg. In 2010 he beacame the managing head of the Institute for Culture and Aestetics of Digital Media (ICAM), where he works as professor.
Furthermore he chaired the section "Computers and Society" in the German "Gesellschaft für Informatik" until 2008, as well as the project “HyperImage” together with Humboldt University. He now chairs the project "Meta-Image" in cooperation with Humboldt-University and Cologne University.
Main Areas of Work
As the one who initiated the department Computers and Culture Martin Warnke developed the curriculum that combines cultural, artistic and computer science issues theoretically and practically. Since 1983 he has been teaching continuously in Lüneburg, Basel and Klagenfurt and tought half a year at the Vienna University.
In several projects together with artists and students Martin Warnke has developed and produced artistic works with digital media. His interdisciplinary methodology is illustrated best by the protection and archival of the artistic estate of the late Anna Oppermann. This methodology consists of hypermedia, interactive systems, image processing and media technology.
He has successfully completed a number of research projects. HyperImage, funded by the german BMBF (Ministery for Education and Resaerch) has been completed. During these projects the XML standard PeTAL (Picture Text Annotation Language) has been developed. It now enters the scientific community. A project recently funded by the DFG (German Research Association) carries on this research. Together with collegues from Lüneburg, Berlin and Basel Martin Warnke has established the annual „HyperKult“-Workshops and the discourse that evolved with it.
As former head of the Computing and Media Centre of the Leuphana University Lüneburg, that underwent a merger between the „Fachhochschule“ and the University, he had to build up a new organisation for the services. As academic it consists of research and teaching in the field of computers and culture („Kulturinformatik“).
Martin Warnke is engaged in the german Computer Society („Gesellschaft für Informatik e. V.). Furthermore he was chair of the working group „Computers as Media“ and of the technical committee „Computers and Society“ of GI e. V. until 2008. He is chair of the Working Group "Virtuality ans Society" in the TC "Computers and Society" of IFIP. Since April 2009 he is the chairperson of the Kunstverein Springhornhof (art club in Neuenkirchen).
Since April 2010 he belongs to the Institute for Culture and Aesthetics of Digital Media as managing head of the institute and as professor.
