Institute for Culture and Aesthetics of Digital Media (ICAM)

The In­sti­tu­te for Cul­tu­re and Aes­t­he­tics of Di­gi­tal Me­dia (ICAM) is the Cent­re for Di­gi­tal Cul­tu­re’s anchor in the Fa­cul­ty for Cul­tu­ral Sci­en­ces. Its re­se­arch fo­cu­ses on di­gi­tal me­dia and cul­tu­res in their his­to­ri­cal, epis­te­mo­lo­gi­cal, tech­ni­cal and tech­no-aes­t­he­ti­cal as­pects. The ICAM is also the base for teaching activities related to the CDC: the Ba­che­lor Ma­jor de­grees in ‘Di­gi­tal Me­dia’ and in ‘Cul­tu­ral Sci­en­ces’ (the lat­ter with are­as of spe­cia­liza­t­i­on in ‘Me­dia and Cul­tu­ral Tech­ni­que’ and ‘Mu­sic and Au­di­to­ry Cul­tu­re’), the new MA Programme ‘Media and Digital Cultures’ (from autumn 2020) and in Doc­to­ral Re­se­arch Group ‘Know­ledge Cul­tu­re/​Di­gi­tal Me­dia.’

Institute of Sociology and Cultural Organization (ISKO)

The In­sti­tu­te of Sociology and Cultural Organization (ISKO) is the Cent­re for Di­gi­tal Cul­tu­re’s second anchor in the Fa­cul­ty for Cul­tu­ral Sci­en­ces. Its re­se­arch fo­cu­ses on social and cultural theory with regard to fields such as cultural organization, sociology of the arts, cultural sociology, organization and media, migration, mobility and (digital) labour. The ISKO also contributes to CDC-related teaching activities: the Ba­che­lor Ma­jor de­grees in ‘Di­gi­tal Me­dia’ and in ‘Cul­tu­ral Sci­en­ces’ and the new, English-speaking MA Programme ‘Culture and Organization’ (from autumn 2020), among others.

Digital Media Bachelor’s Programm

Ba­sed on the re­se­arch of the Cent­re for Digital Cul­tu­res, Leu­pha­na Uni­ver­si­ty of Lüne­burg and Ham­burg Me­dia School of­fer sin­ce 2013 a new Ba­che­lor de­gree in Di­gi­tal Me­dia. In this three-year stu­dy pro­gram, stu­dents ana­ly­ze the ide­as, ap­proa­ches and his­to­ry, as well as the tech­ni­cal foun­da­ti­ons and tools that de­fi­ne di­gi­tal me­dia. They ana­ly­ze di­gi­tal cul­tu­res cri­ti­cal­ly, and de­ve­lop their own hands-on pro­jects. With its foun­da­ti­on in the re­se­arch and net­wor­king ac­tivi­ties of the Cent­re for Di­gi­tal Cul­tu­res, the de­gree pro­gram is in­ter­na­tio­nal­ly ori­en­ted and taught ful­ly in Eng­lish.
