Research Profile

Leuphana University Lueneburg has positioned itself in the international research community with four core research areas: 

Sustainability research, cultural research, educational research & social work as well as management & entrepreneurial actions. In addition, the research profile is characterised by first rate single projects. Leuphana University Lueneburg considers itself an active contributor to processes of social change. Against the backdrop of this self-image, it is currently undergoing an intensive expansion of the traditional strengths of the Lueneburg location, in order to dedicate itself to the key challenges of 21st century civil society. The main research focus of Leuphana University is geared toward the cooperation of various specialist disciplines within the scope of inter- and transdisciplinary research projects. 

Sustainability research

In view of the global changes, sustainability is increasingly becoming a pressing issue. More than ten year ago, Leuphana University Lueneburg was the first university across Germany to establish the division of environmental sciences. These days, the university continues the strategic further development of the transdisciplinary sustainability research approach. With an innovative combination of social, natural and technical sciences, interdisciplinary teams are researching topics relating to sustainable development and issuing recommendations for actions and design.  

Culture

Cultural research is not only an important tool for social reflexion: it is an essential factor for the exploration of the world and equally indispensable for the economic prosperity. Cultural research purposefully counters the trend that universities are increasingly shying away from the humanities – by focusing specifically on the exploration of complex, current problems affecting cultures and society, characterised by three main subject areas: media culture and communication, art and visual culture as well as integrative cultural research.

Educational Research

The tradition of educational research and social work dates back to the foundation of Leuphana University in the early 1950s. These days, empirical educational research and consistent transfer orientation are the strength of this focus against whose backdrop a broad range of topics concerning skills development and education within the scope of generational changes are examined. Questions mainly dealing with changes and new requirements in the social organisation of life are the unmistakable focus of educational research conducted at Leuphana. 

Management and Entrepreneurship

Characterised by a strong focus on applications, Leuphana University Lueneburg is utilising its closeness to the industry, companies and non-profit organisations. With the high practical relevancy and specialisation in various fields of application including business development, human resources, marketing or tax & auditing, Leuphana University Lueneburg combines traditional scientific fields with interdisciplinary innovations such as business psychology, business law or business informatics
