Sources and Sinks of Compounds in the Environment 1 (Seminar)

Inhalt:
Basic distribution mechanisms and abiotic and biotic degradation processes in water, soil and air will be presented. Interactions between different compartments are discussed. Connection of processes occurring in the environment with topics concerning the generation of energy from renewable products, wind and sun will be presented. - Abiotic degradation processes. Distribution processes and their thermodynamic description. Equilibria in environmental chemistry. - Importance of the sun as energy source. Reactions of reactive species such as the OH-radical in the gas phase and in aqueous solution. - Mobility, distribution and advective transport - Application of simple box models (Mackay level 1 and 2) - Degradation by microorganisms - Differences in abiotic and biotic degradation - Renewable energy sources, biogas - Wind energy
Ziel:
Module presents the connection between fundamentals in environmental chemistry and corresponding applications in practice. This qualifies students for research in environmental natural science. Fundamentals of methods in environmental chemistry. Introduction to methods necessary in higher semesters such as practical courses. Assessing the content of scientific papers. Working in a team. Students will learn how to explain and communicate their results using scientific knowledge and understanding. Preparation for the master thesis.
