Course offerings related
The Faculty of Sustainability offers all levels of study, including Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degrees. Courses at all levels provide students the academic skills and fundamentals necessary to pro-actively and competently participate in solving complex environmental and sustainability issues. A short overview on all programs is listed at the end of this webpage.
Sustainability challenges permeate all facets of modern society. The current sustainability-related degree and course selection therefore covers a very wide range of disciplines:
|Natural Science||Social Science and Humanities|
Sustainability policy and economy
All levels of study include participation in transdisciplinary projects, which require students to consolidate and apply their disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge in practice.
Leuphana semester is part of all bachelor programs!
All students entering the undergraduate studies at Leuphana University, visit in the first half - the Leuphana semester - the module "Science has a responsibility," which deals with issues of sustainable development in various facets. The results are presented each year to an organized student conference week on sustainable business practices.
Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences (BSc.)
In response to the challenges of dwindling natural resources and increasing environmental problems, the Environmental Sciences Bachelor focuses on providing students the skills necessary to investigate and understand global climactic and environmental problems from a natural sciences perspective. By investigating these problems from the perspectives of complementary subfields such as social sciences, ecology and economics, students also gain an understanding of the complex social issues often underpinning environmental challenges.
Bachelor of Environmental and Sustainability Studies (B.Sc.)
The Environmental and Sustainability Studies program focuses on the resolution of environmental and sustainability problems that require crossing disciplinary and often geographical boundaries. Challenges such as climate change and energy supply transcend borders and require international problem-solving strategies. All students in this degree program are also offered the opportunity to spend their 4th and 5th semesters at one of four partner universities abroad.
Minor Sustainability Science
The Minor Sustainability Science deals with questions onsustainable development and what that means for the current society. In the study program you will analyze the impacts of global changes and possible solutions to societal problems that exist due to unsustainable habits and lifestyles.
Master of Sustainability Science (MSc.)
The Masters program in Sustainability Science further deepens the student’s understanding of and ability to deal with complex issues surrounding sustainable development and environmental protection. Designed to be flexible, the program has a strong research and solution-oriented focus, situated in a highly inter- and transdisciplinary context. The program strives to strike a balance between sustainable natural sciences and sustainable humanities, in order to thoroughly examine complex social-ecological systems and the sustainability-related problems they face.
Global Sustainability Science (M.Sc)
Leuphana University offers the Sustainability-related Master Program in cooperation with the Arizone State University (Phoenix, USA) respectively designed to meet the academic or professional needs of those who wish to expand their knowledge and contribute to sustainability solutions.
We study the conditions and opportunities of sustainable development. For this purpose, we combine perspectives, concepts and methods from the natural sciences, the social sciences and the humanities (interdisciplinary approach), in particular ecology and chemistry; economics, law, planning and political science; and communication and ethics. To define the problems under study and to design the research objectives and methods we coperate with societal-, political- and economic stakeholders and decisionmakers (transdisciplinary approach).
Research with a particular focus on:
- Ecosystem services
- Energy (transition)
- Material resources
- Social dimension of sustainability
- Methodology of inter- and transdisciplinary sustainability science
