Lüneburg lies in northern Germany about 50 km southeast from Hamburg in the State of Lower Saxony. The Lüneburger Heide, a favorite vacation region, lies close by, as do the North Sea and the Baltic. Hannover, the capitol of Lower Saxony, is an hour away and it takes just 2-3 hours to reach Berlin.

The city's surroundings are charming: If you are looking for relaxation, you can take the train to the Baltic Sea or the Lüneburger Heide. And if you want to spend an evening or weekend enjoying big city excitement, then you have a wide selection: Hamburg, the metropolis on the Elbe, can be reached in just half an hour, Hannover is an hour away, and Berlin is less than three hours by train.
Traveling to Lüneburg
- By Train: Trains to Lüneburg leave Hamburg about every 30 minutes: You can use either an Intercity (IC) or a Metronom (ME), as well as regional trains (RB, MEr). Intercity Expresses generally do not stop in Lüneburg. You can consult the current train schedule at www.bahn.de
- By Car: From either the North or the West, you can take the A 250 highway to Lüneburg; from the South and the East you can take the B 209 highway.
- Flying: Anyone who wants to reach Lüneburg by plane, should reserve a flight to Hamburg. In front of Terminal 2, where most of the international flights arrive, there are regular shuttle buses and a S-Bahn train that run to the Hamburg main train station. Alternatively, you can fly with Ryanair to Lübeck. A shuttle bus runs from there to the Hamburg main stations.
