1977-1976 Research assistant in the research project "Science and Workers' Interests" at the University of Bielefeld, Faculty of Sociology and Faculty of Economics

1979-1987 Research officer at the Ministry of Science and Research of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg

1988-1992 Chairwoman of the Board of the Association of Municipal Children's and Youth Homes of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg e.V. (management of the organisation with 189 day-care centres and approx. 5000 employees)

1992-1994 Lectureship at the University of Hamburg in the Department of Education and in the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences

1995 University professor at the University of Lüneburg (since 2006 Leuphana University Lüneburg) for Sachunterricht and its didactics and since 2010 also for "Education for Sustainable Development"; until 2014 head of the Institute for Integrative Studies of the Faculty of Education, at the same time member of the Institute for Environmental Communication in the Faculty of Sustainability
