Intensive Textarbeit beim Academic Writing Workshop

08. Oktober 2010

A few tips on elegant phrasing...

"Against all what we have learnt in the Academic Writing Workshop, I would like to start with the most important aspect of this brief reflective report, namely the conclusion: Personally, I found this workshop very useful and it has helped me greatly to improve my written academic English and therefore, I can only give a recommendation to attend it. The atmosphere was quite relaxed and comfortable, to which the round table we sat at and the coffee, tea and biscuits certainly made a contribution. Although you might think “Hmm… can I spare the two days to go to this workshop? I have so many other things to do…“ The answer is: Yes you can! The two days are very well spent and will certainly help you to save time in future, when writing academic English texts!

The workshop ran for two consecutive days and took place in a small group of 15 people. The venue of the workshop was the small but nice library of the Center for the Study of Democracy, here at Leuphana. The lecturer was Dr. Michael Pätzold from the University of Bielefeld, who is an anglist by training and very experienced in the field of academic writing and the English language. Prior to the workshop, Michael emailed us some material and exercises to work through and asked us to bring a short text we were currently working on.

On Thursday morning, after Michael had introduced himself, it was up to us to introduce ourselves and tell the others something about our academic background and the fields of our studies. After this introduction round we started to work on the texts we had brought with us. We went through them sentence by sentence, and discussed how it could be improved. I found it really helpful to do this practical exercise and learnt a lot by applying rules of, for example, how to structure a sentence, how to use certain phrases or how to emphasise certain aspects of your text.

Working on our texts represented the main part of this workshop but occasionally we did smaller exercises that were very useful and a welcome variety to going through our texts. The lunch breaks we spent together in the University’s cafeteria, where a table had been reserved for our group. Informal and very relaxed discussions about everything but academic writing made it very enjoyable and provided us with new energy for the afternoon sessions.

Throughout the workshop, we received valuable tips and tricks on where to look up words, word combinations or even entire phrases for writing an academic text in proper English, and which dictionaries should be used for what purposes. On Friday evening, after the workshop had finished, I was quite exhausted but at the same time very happy that I had participated in it, as it really helped me to improve my written academic English. The way Michael taught us new skills and delivered the workshop was very enjoyable and definitely worth the two days.
