Towards a »Culture of Sustainable Consumption« in Educational Organizations: A Critical Examination of Educational Organizations‘ Contributions to a Sustainable Consumer Socialization (Working title)

Kurzbeschreibung:

In 1992, the Agenda 21 was passed in Rio de Janeiro, emphasizing the need to change unsustainable patterns of consumption and production. In chapter 36 and in the further post-Rio discourse, education and educational institutions are unanimously ascribed to play a pivotal role in bringing about a change towards sustainable consumption.

The dissertation examines the potentials of educational institutions to contribute to the promotion of a sustainable consumption. A perspective is taken that views educational institutions as entities bringing about a distinct cultural order of dominant and marginalized consumption-related norms, values and assumptions. Drawing on and integrating approaches from the field of organizational culture, school and university culture as well as organization and consumer culture theory, this configuration is conceptualized as an educational institution’s culture of consumption.

In the cumulative dissertation, the theoretical framework developed is applied and continuously further elaborated in a transdisciplinary process with six educational institutions in the project BINK. Additionally, quantitative and qualitative empirical research is conducted to closer examine selected domains of the framework.
