The inauguration of the Chair took place within the context of the conference "Higher Education for Sustainable Development: New Challenges from a Global Perspective", which was supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

From September 25th to 27th, 2005, the Institute and the German Commission for UNESCO shared the pleasure of welcoming 150 participants from 20 different countries and five continents to celebrate the inaugurations and to discuss current problems and experiences arising in the context of the academic discourse on Education for Sustainable Development.

The central focus of the Conference included issues concerning teaching in higher education, the production of knowledge and intercultural teaching and learning.

In 2007 the  second international conference on Higher Education for Sustainable Development has been organized in cooperation with the Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, Mexico: “World in Transition – Sustainability Perspectives for Higher Education” July 5-7, 2007

This year the 3rd International Conference on Higher Education for Sustainable Development will take place 20–22 November 2009 in Malaysia. The Universiti Sains Malaysia and the Leuphana University of Lüneburg cordially invite you to participate in the 3rd International Conference on Sustainability in Higher Education.
