About LüneburgABOUT LÜNEBURG

Mons, Pons, and Fons - The symbols of the mountain, the bridge, and the salt spring are depicted in the town crest of Lüneburg and represent three different settlements: one around the limestone mountain (Kalkberg), one close to the Ilmenau River, and one near the spring where the salt museum is located today. Eventually, these settlements grew together and developed into the medieval city of Lüneburg.

In Lüneburg you have the possibility to travel back in time. When you wander through the charming town center, let the picturesque cobbled streets with their unique red brick gabled buildings transport you back into the Gothic period. This charming little city on the Ilmenau is of architectural as well as historical interest due to Lüneburg's salt trade with the Hanseatic League. Salt, known as "white gold", transformed this beautiful city into an affluent one as well. During World War II, Lüneburg was left untouched, and consequently, the medieval charm of the city has been preserved and can be experienced first hand.

A multitude of unique sights awaits you in Lüneburg:

  • the Town Hall which reflects various architectural periods
  • the Old Water Tower which offers a panoramic view of the city
  • the Stint (the old harbour) which is famous for its crane, Lüneburg's secret landmark
  • the Salt Museum where you are invited to immerse yourself in the history of salt in Lüneburg.

After exploring the cultural side of the city, you can visit one of the numerous pubs located in the Schröderstrasse and at the Stint or maybe go shopping in one of Lüneburg's numerous stores as well as exclusive boutiques which are tucked away in the quaint little side streets. If you need a change of scenery, take a stroll through the Kurpark (spa gardens) and breathe in the healthy, salty air of the Gradierwerk (graduation towers). Round off your day with a relaxing visit to the SaLü with its salt-water swimming pools and diverse selection of saunas.
