Have you ever wondered how sounds are produced or how they make meaning, or what the relationship between words and meaning might be? What about the relationship between the words, “liberty” and “freedom,” for example? Are they identical in meaning? If so, why do we say “freedom of speech” but not “liberty of speech”? This course, in offering students an introduction to modern linguistics, addresses these and many other questions pertaining to language. We look at the specifics of language structure, such as speech sounds (phonetics and phonology), words and their internal structure (morphology), phrases and sentence structure (syntax), meaning of words and sentences (semantics), and meaning of utterances in communication (pragmatics). In addition, we look at the relations between language and society and also at how language develops over time.

This course deals with the relationship between language and society. In particular, it focuses on the huge diversity found in language use in society, diversity which stems on the one hand from social, regional, gender, age and ethnic variation and on the other hand from stylistic variation.

“You have a watch?”: When might this utterance be used and what might it mean? Might it be to compliment someone on a new watch, or to ask the time or …? What about the utterance “I forgot my watch today”? What does it mean? Should this be interpreted as an apology? Or might it not also be a request for the time? All solutions are possible. It depends on the context. This course deals with pragmatics, the study of language in context. We focus on speech act theory and politeness theories and examine how the conventions of language use vary across cultures. We also discuss how pragmatic variation can be introduced into the English language classroom.

Language of instruction: English/German The module Independent Studies has the following format: Students select a topic or area on which they would like to work in greater detail, and then find a lecturer to supervise the work. At the beginning of the semester, students and lecturers agree on contents and draw up a schedule for the term. In this way, students are able to create an individual focus in their studies and can work intensively and with close tutoring by lecturers on topics and areas in which they are particularly interested. In some cases it may be relevant in terms of preparatory work for MA theses. Anyone interested in this module should please come to the meeting detailed above Zum dem Format Independent Studies: Studierende wählen ein Thema, das sie vertieft bearbeiten möchten und suchen sich einen Lehrenden, der es betreut. Am Beginn des Semesters legen Studierende/r und Lehrende/r gemeinsam das Arbeitsprogramm fest, das im Verlauf des Semesters und in dauernder inhaltlicher Rückkoppelung bearbeitet wird. Die Studierenden haben so die Möglichkeit, eigenständige Akzente in ihrem Studium zu setzen und sich – auch als Vorbereitung auf die MA-Arbeit – in engem fachlichen Austausch mit einem oder einer Lehrenden vertieft mit Themen und Problemstellungen auseinanderzusetzen, die in besonderer Weise mit ihren Studienschwerpunkten korrespondieren. Am Semesterbeginn wird ein Informationstermin stattfinden. Wer sich für diese Lehrveranstaltung interessiert, möchte bitte unbedingt diesen Termin wahrnehmen.
