Inhalt:
This course introduces students to aspects of museum management and administration, including policies and procedures, personnel management, budget formulation, governance, and interaction with support organizations.
Cases studies are used to illustrate the application of good management practices in particular contexts.
Students will undertake practical site visits to local museums in Lüneburg and Hamburg and one site-based management analysis as part of their assessed work for the course. An excursion to Berlin is planned (May-June) to meet museum professionals and analyse cultural policies in State Museums.
Ziel:
Its focus is on issues of organizational and managerial practice. The course identifies the typical mix of challenges involved in running a museum successfully, drawing on a combination of museum studies, business management and cultural and business leadership literature.
An important part of the seminar will address public policies concerning museums in different countries (Germany, UK, USA, Italy, France) and more in general, fundraising strategies of both local museums and international institutions.

The module Independent Studies has the following format: Students select a topic or area on which they would like to work in greater detail, and then find a lecturer to supervise the work. At the beginning of the semester, students and lecturers agree on contents and draw up a schedule for the term. In this way, students are able to create an individual focus in their studies and can work intensively and with close tutoring by lecturers on topics and areas in which they are particularly interested. In some cases it may be relevant in terms of preparatory work for MA theses. Anyone interested in this module should please come to the meeting detailed above
Zum dem Format Independent Studies:
Studierende wählen ein Thema, das sie vertieft bearbeiten möchten und suchen sich einen Lehrenden, der es betreut. Am Beginn des Semesters legen Studierende/r und Lehrende/r gemeinsam das Arbeitsprogramm fest, das im Verlauf des Semesters und in dauernder inhaltlicher Rückkoppelung bearbeitet wird. Die Studierenden haben so die Möglichkeit, eigenständige Akzente in ihrem Studium zu setzen und sich – auch als Vorbereitung auf die MA-Arbeit – in engem fachlichen Austausch mit einem oder einer Lehrenden vertieft mit Themen und Problemstellungen auseinanderzusetzen, die in besonderer Weise mit ihren Studienschwerpunkten korrespondieren.
Am Semesterbeginn wird ein Informationstermin stattfinden. Wer sich für diese Lehrveranstaltung interessiert, möchte bitte unbedingt diesen Termin wahrnehmen.

This module is usually studied through German. In order to accommodate exchange students, some tutoring in English is available and it is possible to submit the term paper in English.
In der Regel wird dieser Kurs auf Deutsch abgelegt.
Um Austauschstudierenden das Belegen des Moduls zu ermöglichen, sind eine englischsprachige Betreuung sowie das Verfassen der Hausarbeit auf Englisch möglich.
