Summer School
In 2005, 2006 and 2007 the Standing Group on Central and East European Politics of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) organized a series of annual graduate / PhD summer schools on the general theme of “Governance and Democracy in Central Eastern Europe”. They were jointly funded by the ECPR and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Each year the Summer School brought together an international team of renowned scholars in the field of democracy studies and research methods to teach groups of 20-25 junior researchers (mainly MPhil and PhD students) working on Central Eastern European democracies. Directed by Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Müller-Rommel, the Center for the Study of Democracy (ZDEMO) provided the location and the organizational management.
The three schools were a tremendous success: many participants with just MA degrees have since gone on to pursue doctoral studies at institutions such as the European University Institute, while PhD students have come back as guest researchers to stay at ZDEMO.
Future ZDEMO Summer Schools are planned.
