SUMMARY:OPENING (2/2): Career Paths in Academia
DESCRIPTION:What does an academic career in Germany actually look like beyo
nd the idealized image of “becoming a professor”?\n\nThis workshop provides
an overview of academic career paths within the German research system, in
cluding professorships at public and private universities, universities of
applied sciences (HAWs), as well as alternative academic roles and employme
nt models.\n\nA particular focus lies on understanding the implicit rules,
structural realities, and less visible dynamics of academic careers in Germ
any, including temporary contracts, competition, mobility expectations, pub
lication pressure, networking, and institutional cultures.\n\nIn addition,
the workshop provides practical strategies for positioning yourself more co
nsciously and strategically for the next career step.\n\n---\n\nDr. Anne Sc
hreiter is Executive Director of GSO – Guidance, Skills & Opportunities for
Researchers e.V., a nonprofit organization supporting researchers at trans
itional stages of their careers. Anne earned her PhD in Organizational Soci
ology from the University of St. Gallen and conducted postdoctoral research
at UC Berkeley. She also serves on the advisory boards of the German Postd
oc Network and the Science Management Network.
