What is the best way to respond to another writer’s work? What are some of the principles guiding readers of academic prose, and what strategies and practices do these readers use to come up with thoughtful, respectful, and constructive feedback on work in progress (as well as texts almost ready for submission)? Which responses allow writers to improve their work and their practice, and which do not? In this workshop, we explore these questions in theoretical and practical terms in order to become better readers of and respondents to academic texts. To that end, we will consider the practice of responding to another writer’s text in both theoretical and practical terms, also by using hands-on exercises involving written feedback.
