Mourning Jaya Arunachalam's death

2019-07-16 Lüneburg/Chennai. Leuphana University of Lüneburg mourns the loss of Dr. h.c. Jaya Arunachalam. She had reached 84 years. Arunachalam was the first woman to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Lüneburg in 1999.

Jaya Arunachalam graduated in economics and geography and earned a management diploma in the USA. The award-winning scientist founded the Working Women's Forum in India in 1978 and was its long-standing president. The non-governmental organisation is one of the largest women's organisations in Asia. Its aim is to improve the social, political and economic situation of poor women. In view of the rather unsuccessful state aid measures, the organisation was founded with the aim of organising help for self-help. The members take their fate into their own hands and support each other.

Jaya Arunachalam was awarded an honorary doctorate by the then Faculty of Education at the University of Lüneburg in 1999. He honoured Ms Arunachalam's outstanding scientific, organisational and political achievements in developing a socially equitable future for society.

Jaya Arunachalam died in Chennai on 29 June 2019. Leuphana University of Lüneburg deeply mourns her loss.
