Strong increase in applicants for the winter semester

2020-09-02 There have been nearly 11,000 applications to the college even without a current high school graduation year in Lower Saxony – The Graduate School also records an enormous increase in demand.

Lüneburg. Nearly 11,000 applicants for approximately 1,400 first semester places at the college, which are assigned to the winter semester, are registered by the matriculation service of the Leuphana University of Lüneburg. The number of applications has thus risen sharply compared to the previous year, even though there are no new high school graduates in Lower Saxony due to the conversion to G9. This development shows the high national attractiveness of Leuphana.

The highest absolute number of applications for the main subjects was for business administration (1,067), environmental sciences (881) and psychology (820). Nearly 3,000 prospective students applied for the 11 subjects in the Bachelor of Teaching and Learning, which prepares students for a Master's degree in teaching at elementary, secondary and grammar schools.

Leuphana's English-language courses are particularly attractive. Almost 10 or more applications per place have been received in "Psychology", "Global Environmental and Sustainability Studies", "International Business Administration and Entrepreneurship" and "Digital Media". In Lüneburg, all subjects offered are admission restricted, i.e. the number of places available is limited. This applies to the 13 major subjects at the college as well as to all subjects in the three teacher training study programs.

The number of applications for the 380 places in the largely English-language Master's program at Leuphana's Graduate School rose to about 2,500. With 522 applications for admission, the Master of Management & Entrepreneurship reached the highest absolute number of applications. More than 240 applications were received for the Master's program "Sustainability Science - Sustainability Science". Looking at the relation between applications and study places, the Master's programs "Management & Data Science" are by far the most popular. With more than 12 applications for each place, the "Global Sustainability Science" program follows.

University President Prof. (HSG) Dr. Sascha Spoun is pleased about the greatly increased interest in studying at Leuphana. Above all, the great demand for the English-language courses shows that the university is on a good development path in terms of study programs. Spoun also sees the current number of applicants as proof of the continuing attractiveness of the special Leuphana study model and as a result of the great efforts of all lecturers to be able to offer a study program rich in content even under corona conditions.
