Remedial Teaching - German as a foreign language

The Concept

The aim of the project is to reduce the disadvantage of pupils with a migration background by facilitating their language skills. German is the language of instruction in mainstream schools in Germany and thus the key to success in all school subjects. Therefore, our offer of learner-oriented German language support as well as the improvement of language skills, which are necessary in all school subjects, is a focus of the work in "special needs education". The remedial courses are offered in the cooperating schools. There, students receive German lessons for a maximum of two hours per week in the afternoons.

The focus is on language skills, but subject-related questions are also included. In order to be able to work with the pupils in a focussed manner, the groups of pupils consist of a maximum of five people. Leuphana students are introduced as course leaders who are specifically prepared for this task.

The following schools and institutions are involved in the project:

     - Grammar school Oedeme
     - IGS Kaltenmoor
     - BBS I in Lüneburg
     - BBS II in Lüneburg (including the Landesfachschule Metall Niedersachsen)

Your Commitment pays off twice!

The remedial teaching is also a great opportunity for you! You have the opportunity to gain practical teaching experience during your studies under the guidance of experienced university lecturers. In the accompanying seminar, the lessons are discussed in advance and afterwards, thus offering a wide range of practical experience.

Since school classes are increasingly multicultural, the acquisition of such a qualification is particularly helpful for professional activities later on. In recognition of your work, you can receive a certificate from the Institute for German Language and Literature and its didactics.

The Requirements

The project is open to all students of the Leuphana teacher training program (primary and secondary schools, secondary modern schools and vocational schools) of all disciplines.

Students with a migration background as well as students who wish to acquire the certificate "German as a Second Language" in addition to their German studies are explicitly welcome to participate. It is recommended but not mandatory that you have already completed your general teaching practice; of course, you should also have an interest in dealing with linguistics.

In the project module you will be prepared for the requirements of ethnically and linguistically diverse schools. It is also recommended that you complete the certification class "German as a Second Language" or take part in the module "Multilingualism in German Lessons" DEU 460.

The programme includes the following aspects, among others:

- Second language acquisition and multilingualism,
- didactic aspects of the design of remedial teaching,
- Language structures and contrastive display of selected languages (e.g. Turkish, Russian),
- Diagnosis of typical language and writing weaknesses and
- dealing with language problems and communication difficulties.

In order for you to be able to do your tasks justice, there will be an opportunity for frequent communication regarding your experiences with the teaching practice and supervision during the school year. This takes place within the framework of an accompanying seminar, which can also be credited either as a subject didactic project module (DEU 221) OR as part of the DaZ certificate.

You will not be left alone with questions and problems!

The Time Frame

Cooperation of the Institute for German Language and Literature and its didactics with the AWO Social Services and the Mercator Foundation

The remedial teaching in the schools is arranged very individually in terms of time, usually comprising two to four hours per week.

The students commit themselves to be in charge of the lessons as remedial teachers for at least half a year. A new assignment will be given according to need. Since there is a waiting list of potential support teachers, registrations are possible at any time.

You will be informed in good time whether you have been accepted. If necessary, selection interviews will be held. An introductory event will take place in advance, that will prepare you for your task and provide you with teaching materials, tips and tricks.
