Workshop (LCOY 2025): Climate justice – The Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice
17. Oct
Lecturer: Maren Solmecke (Link)
Location: Room C14.102b (Leuphana University Lüneburg)
Time: 17:00 - 18:30
The workshop will focus on the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) recent Advisory Opinion on Climate Change, published in July this year. This decision offers hope for a more ambitious global climate policy, which is urgently needed. At the same time, the process leading up to the advisory opinion has fuelled debates on climate justice and reparations for climate-related damage. After a brief introduction to the topic, we will analyse the advisory opinion's key statements, determine their potential significance for global climate negotiations (especially in view of COP30), and discuss the divergence between law and political reality.
This event is part of this year's LCOY conference, which will take place on the campus of Leuphana University Lüneburg from 17 to 19 October 2025. LCOY (the Local Conference of Youth) is Europe's largest climate conference for young people and provides a forum for exchange with representatives from politics, business and science. Our doctoral student Maren Solmecke will use this forum, as she did already last year (link), to present her research findings to a general audience and introduce them to public debate.
If you are interested in participating, please contact the LCOY organisers (the link to the conference website).
