Workshop: Transformative Constitutionalism in Latin America

On 7 and 8 April 2025, Professor Dr René Fernando Urueña Hernández (Universidad de los Andes) gave a workshop at the Joachim Herz Doctoral School of Law on the topic of 'International Transformative Constitutionalism in Latin America'. The workshop focused particularly on the transformative effect of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights' case law on the constitutions and societies of Latin American member states. Professor Urueña addressed issues such as climate change, LGBTI rights, gender equality, indigenous rights, natural rights and migration.

His insights were not only of practical relevance for understanding current developments in Latin America, but also extremely helpful for developing a general understanding of the impact of law at national, international and regional levels with regard to transformative developments and their governance. We would therefore like to thank him for his valuable insights.

Professor Urueña is Associate Professor at the Universidad de los Andes (Colombia) and holds the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Chair at the same institution. He is also currently a Fellow at Max Planck Law (link). He graduated in Law and Economics from the Universidad de los Andes and holds a Master's degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Helskini.
