Which level is right for me?

Beginner

For a new language at level A1 you do not need any previous knowledge and can start immediately. A placement test is not required.

Credit points can be entered in your Transcript of Records as additional credit points.

A1 events are offered for all languages except English.

Intermediate

Language course with level A2

Students can review and extend their knowledge from level A2.

In order to find the right level for you, please take a placement test in the SLZ (Self-Access Center).

Credit points can be entered in your Transcript of Records as additional credit points.

Advanced

Language course with level B1 or higher

For experienced language users, we recommend levels B1 and B2.

At level B1 or higher, your credit points will be entered in your Transcript of Records as additional credit points.

欢迎

Level: Beginning and low intermediate (A1 - A2)

Time: 4 hours per week + independent study

Reward: 5 additional credit points

For most people, the degree to which the structure of the language differs from that of other common languages means that more time has to be dedicated to learning this language than to learning a language more similar to one’s first language. However after only a few classes, you will be able to carry on simple conversations.

FAQ

When do I need to take a placement test?

A placement test to determine your proficiency level is required for all courses at level A2 or higher. If you have already taken an A1 course taught in the respective language, a placement test is not necessary.

The test results remain valid for two semesters. They serve to map your position on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) scale.

The placement tests for English, French, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish are administered at the Self-Access Center.  The test can be taken anytime the Self-Access Center is open, without prior registration.

The following guidelines apply to English: You do not need to take a placement test if you possess a valid test result from one of the following certificate exams (TOEIC, TOEFL, Cambridge C Level, IELTS) taken within the past two years.

When applying for exchange programs at partner universities, only the placement test administered by the Language Center is an acceptable means of proving sufficient English proficiency.

How can I learn a language through independent study?

Learn a language by yourself

Multimedia independent study materials for many languages can be found at the Self-Access Center. The student tutors are there to help find the option best for you.

If you would like, you can use practice material for internationally recognized certification for certain languages at the Self-Access Center.

Please get in touch with the tutors (slz@leuphana.de) to make an appointment for an introduction to the multimedia offerings of the Self-Access Center.

The Self-Access Center team is looking forward to meeting you!
