Basic Principles of Disciplinary Citation and Reference Systems

For novice academic writers, it is often not all that easy to describe the ideas and positions of others accurately and appropriately. For example, it might not be entirely clear when to use a quotation or a paraphrase or what the proper ratio of quotations and paraphrases should be. Other major challenges include integrating outside sources in a way that these will advance or support an argument or developing a clear position as an author of academic texts (including the related use of the first person). Using several examples and hands-on exercises, we will develop answers to these questions and consider how you, too, can use outside sources effectively and appropriately.
