Overview of TOEIC Listening and Reading Test

The TOEIC was developed in 1979 by the ETS (Educational Testing Service). In contrast to the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), which tests academic English, the TOEIC focuses particularly on applying the English language in a work-related context.

The standardized test is made up of 200 multiple choice questions, 100 of which test listening comprehension and 100 of which test reading comprehension. The questions are based on authentic situations occurring in a normal workday, such as meetings, business trips, and negotiations.

In recent years the internationally recognized TOEIC has continued to gain significance amongst European universities – not only as a certification exam (e.g. when applying for a job upon completion of studies), but also as an entrance exam (to provide proof of English language skills).

The Language Center has been recognized as a TOEIC testing center since 2004.

Preparation

To prepare for the TOEIC, we recommend that you take the placement test at the Self-Access Center to determine your language level.

A score of 650 points, which is within the B1 range, is needed to meet the English language requirements for the Bachelor programs. A score of 785 points – needed to register for Consecutive Master Courses of Studies or doctoral studies – is within the B2 range. Please keep in mind that achieving a new level takes a lot of work and time (about 200 hours).

Come to the TOEIC office hours with the results of your placement test and we will help set up a preparation time plan!
