Academic Initiative on Culture

The declared task of the scholars involved in the Academic Initiative on Culture consists in stimulating theoretical self-conception in cultural studies and in combining research and teaching to further sharpen the existing, independent profile of Lüneburg Cultural Studies/Cultural Analysis.

The researchers participating in the research initiative Cultural Research aim at livening up the cultural studies’ theoretical self-understanding. By linking research and teaching, they intend to give a cutting edge to the characteristic profile of the Lüneburg Cultural Studies.

Three thematic priorities deserve special mention in view of their profile-forming effect and their recognisably strong integrating power for the research activities of the Academic initiative on culture:

  • research on historical, epistemological and application-oriented issues of interdisciplinary aspects of culture and media studies, not least from a historico-technological viewpoint, pooled together at the Centre for Digital Cultures (CDC)
  • the Centre for Democracy Research (ZDEMO) brings together research activities from the field of democracy and value research embedded in cultural studies, but clearly oriented towards social sciences as a whole.

The interacted approaches of humanities and social sciences constitute the characteristic feature of Lüneburg cultural research. All three profile priorities share a high degree of institutionalisation by institutes and inter-faculty research centres. Larger third-party funding projects are available in all faculties or are at an advanced application stage.

The DFG Research Group “Media Cultures of Computer Simulation” (MECS) is investigating which new kinds of knowledge arises from computer simulations and how their use shifts the understanding of science.

The aim of the Cultures of Criticism DFG Research Training Group is to use concrete cases of art, media and social criticism to re-examine the connection between criticism and culture in the history of modernity up to the present day and to develop an updated understanding of criticism based on cultural studies.
