Inhalt: This course will provide an introduction to political science as a scholarly discipline. It will focus on (a) the underlying philosophical and conceptual bases of the field and (b) its core scientific methods and resources. First we will examine questions like: What is the relationship of politics and political science to other disciplines in the social sciences? What are some of the epistemological approaches to political science (or beliefs about what we can know about politics)? What are the normative and philosophical ideas that underpin contemporary political science? Second, we will examine key methodological principles such as hypothesis- and theory-formation, quantitative vs. qualitative approaches, scientific research design, scholarly resources and academic writing.

Inhalt: This course will provide an introduction to the basic nature of government and politics in contemporary democracies. We will cover a broad range of topics that are sometimes referred to as ‘comparative politics’. At the same time, we will treat these topics in such a way as to understand the nature of politics and society more broadly.
