Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 08:15 - 09:45 | 04.04.2016 - 10.07.2016 | C 5.124 Seminarraum
Inhalt: Until recently, memoir was often seen as the step-child of literary studies. As a result of the internet, blogging, twitter, and the growing interest in the daily lives of people in general, narratives in the form non-fiction writing are booming. Although life writing about the rich and famous is still popular, increasingly more attention is being given to groups whose voices have not much been heard. In this project-oriented class, students will be introduced to life writing and techniques writers of non-fiction use to tell their own stories. Moreover, students will explore the genre memoir by reading and critically analyzing the New York Times Bestseller,Growing Up Amish by the Ex-Amish blogger Ira Wagler. Students will have the chance to attend the author's public reading on July 3, 2015. In the second part of the course, students will be mentored on an individual basis and write about their own lives. They will be involved in peer editing and expected to revise their own writing as well as present/read their life writing piece to the class. Students will learn to use the software Audacity and produce lively read audio versions of their stories that will be compiled into a class cd. Everyone has a story to tell. What is yours?
Working with Words (Übung)
Dozent/in: Maryann Henck
Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 12:15 - 13:45 | 04.04.2016 - 10.07.2016 | C 5.109 Seminarraum
Inhalt: Do you find yourself dodging the dictionary, confounded by collocations, terrified by translation yet somehow in love with LEO? Perhaps you just feel overwhelmed by words and their wily ways. If you haven’t found your inner “word nerd” yet (and even if you have), this seminar will make a logophile (or maybe even a logomaniac) out of you. After a brief introduction to the perils of translation and the benefits of effective cross-referencing skills, subsequent course topics will include but are not limited to: eponyms; acronyms and initialisms; clippings and blends; connotations and denotations; homonyms, homophones, and homographs. Using a variety of cultural texts (e.g. lyrics/poetry, fiction and non-fiction, films and television series, etc.) as potential sources, you will begin collecting and selecting new words for practical as well as creative exercises. The ultimate objective is not only to learn how to work with words but also how to make them work for you.
