Inhalt: An overt understanding of language enables teachers to plan, monitor, evaulate and self-correct when teaching and learning a foreign language, such as English. This course, in offering students an introduction to modern linguistics, equips them with this essential meta-awareness. We look at the specifics of language structure, such as speech sounds (phonetics and phonology), words and their internal structure (morphology), phrases and sentence structure (syntax), meaning of words and sentences (semantics), the meaning of utterances in communication (pragmatics) and finally address the relationship between language and society (sociolinguistics).
