Adventures of the Anti-Dialectic. On the Untimely and the Contemporary (Seminar)

Inhalt: What is the contemporary? How can we relate to contemporary reality and reflect on it? With reference to Nietzsche’s Untimely Meditations and to Roland Barthes, Giorgio Agamben pinpoints two essential qualities of the contemporary: temporal disconnection and anachronism. He writes: “Contemporariness is that relationship with time that adheres to it through a disjunction and an anachronism”. The anti-dialectic adventures of most part of contemporary literature and philosophical discourses have disjoined easy adherences and deconstructed fundamental arrangements of contemporary knowledge. Most of these discourses and meditations are untimely: they bring about breaks in the episteme of contemporary thought. The seminar will explore crucial shifts and discontinuities occurred in our recent culture. In this connection it will focus on seminal literary and philosophical works that illustrate such changes and displacements. Topics to be included: the thought of the inoperative or unavowable community (Maurice Blanchot, Jean-Luc Nancy), the limit-experiences that wrench the subject from itself (as in the literary work by Georges Bataille), the end of the anthropological slumber through the experiences of tragedy and madness (F. Nietzsche, M. Foucault), the emergence of a thought of multiplicity in the philosophical work by Gilles Deleuze and in the theatrical practice by Carmelo Bene.
