Inhalt: The course examines movements and problems in 20th Century art history and art theory through the lens of monopoly capitalism. How did artists and theorists define modernity from the so-called margins of capitalism and how did they understand the role of art in historical transformation? By privileging the study of 20th C. art from Latin America and the Caribbean, critical texts and works of art will help us to explore the historical logic, ideologies, and aesthetics of capitalism in its imperial mode, from the promotion of abstract art as a code for social modernization, to the function of cultural patrimony in the extraction of subsoil resources, and the contemporary role played by both artworks, institutions, and the techniques of logistics in financial speculation.
