Inhalt: Art has increasingly led into public forms, coming to dominate contemporary art practices, exhibitions, and museums. Yet, the definition of the “public” in public art remains vague and varied. "Public" might refer to the mode of artistic exhibition: art presented in public spaces or art that is publicly accessible, encompassing everything from statues and free museum days to murals and graffiti. Similarly, "public" might indicate art produced for a general audience rather than just small groups of art-minded individuals or elite collectors. Public art also carries political and social significance, as it may be created as a public good or intended to influence social and political dynamics. Notably, public art can involve participatory and collaborative practices, aiming to engage the public and include them in the production of art. This course examines the various ways in which art has come to be regarded as public, while critically exploring the concepts of “art” and "public" in relation to contemporary political modernity, society, the state, and democratic practices. Additionally, this course invites participating students to experiment with the idea of public art through the production and curation of public art installations. The concepts and ideas from the course material will be approached through artistic experiment.

Inhalt: Issues of contested heritage and the enduring legacies of colonialism are among the most urgent challenges today. This seminar focuses on the work of Black artists in Germany who emerge as pivotal agents of change, navigating and challenging the complex terrains of narratives, public spaces, archives, and museum collections. By interrogating the history of colonialism and the Black presence in Europe also preceding colonial times, Black artists disrupt dominant narratives and confront the erasure of colonial violence, historical and present injustices, and exploitation. Through their interventions, they do not only demand recognition and redress for the enduring traumas inflicted on Black communities, forging connections between past and present struggles for justice, but also unearth stratigraphies of physical and epistemic violence. This seminar investigates the ways how the work of Black artists reclaims urban landscapes, amplifying silenced voices, transforming public spaces into sites of resistance and remembrance, and challenging viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about Germany’s colonial past and its reverberations in the present. It discusses how they engage with archives and archival materials, subverting dominant narratives and reconstructing alternative histories to challenge the selective amnesia that often obscures the contributions of Black communities. The seminar examines how they work with museum collections, confront contested heritage, dismantle colonial legacies, and envision more just and equitable futures. It seeks to foster critical dialogue on the transformative power of Black artistic interventions in Germany, excavating hidden histories and sounding out potential alliances between academic and artistic research. The course will include half day excursions to the MARKK Museum am Rothenbaum in Hamburg, and to Kunsthalle Bremen, as well as an excursion to Berlin with discussions at Dekoloniale, HKW (Haus der Kulturen der Welt), Savvy Contemporary, and the Humboldt Forum. Please bring your student ID cards for the museum visits!
