Language, Culture and Communication Meets Science Fiction (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: Science Fiction can be seen as a useful sociological thought experiment. After all It isn’t possible or ethical to use people as lab rats; however, science fiction allows us to do just that without harming people. Through the genre we can see if a language helps form the culture or the culture forms the language. Additionally, communication and how it is used within different societies can reflect not only society but also the individual. Various examples of language, culture and communication will be used to highlight science fiction and society. After a brief introduction to this genre students will apply various theories to specific literature, film and TV shows and will discuss and further develop what they discover. Finally students will reflect on how their use of language and culture influences their communication.
