Inhalt: The teaching will be done by Dr. Iris Seidemann (https://www.wiso.uni-hamburg.de/fachbereich-sozoek/professuren/geiger/team/seidemann-iris.html) Aims: The course aims to help students understand what defines “wicked problems,” why they are challenging to tackle, and to explore key examples in sustainability management. By engaging with recent perspectives in organization and management research, students will learn to analyze complex sustainability issues, understand their entanglement, and develop strategies to address them in organizational and entrepreneurial contexts. Content: The course explores four contemporary theoretical perspectives that offer alternative ways to approach complex sustainability challenges and guide effective management action: • Alternative forms of organizing to address wicked sustainability problems (e.g., social entrepreneurship) • A paradox lens for managing competing yet contradictory sustainability demands (e.g., profit versus social goals) • A temporality lens on sustainability problems (e.g., balancing short-term pressures with long-term sustainability goals) • Routines and practices shaping the “wickedness” of distinct sustainability problems (e.g., the emergence of unintended consequences and adverse effects through mundane actions) Each session introduces one theoretical perspective, applies its core ideas to a practical sustainability challenge, and discusses implications for management and practice.
