Forum for Bachelor Thesis I Qualitative Research Methods (Kolloquium)

Inhalt: This colloquium is targeted for IBAE students in the 6th semester. Students will be made familiar with the processes of scientific research and academic writing. They will receive guidance on how to narrow down their problem focus, how to search for relevant literature, how to do key methodological choices, and how to discuss their findings and theoretical contributions against the background of the existing literature. The colloquium will feature a mix of useful tips&tricks from the lecturer as well as student presentations of their work-in-progress bachelor theses.

Inhalt: The Bachelor Colloquium is designed for students working on their final thesis with a focus on qualitative research methods. It covers the following topics: (1) What is an "appropriate" research question? (2) What is "appropriate" literature, and where do I find it? (3) What is an "appropriate" research design? (4) How to "appropriately" generate and report research outcomes? The concept of the Colloquium is "inverted". That is, rather than lecturing, the Colloquium centers on students' thesis projects as well as the questions and concerns that arise in and through them. These questions and concerns are elicited through short, max. 3-min thesis "pitches" (without slides) and jointly discussed. This enables collective learning that directly relates to students' thesis projects on the one side, and raises important issues that students might have thought about regarding their own project on the other.

Inhalt: The Bachelor Forum will take place during the first weeks of the semester. The different sessions are designed to familiarize you with the formal requirements, methodological and data-related issues, the writing process, and the oral defense of a Bachelor Thesis at the Institute of Management, Accounting and Finance (IMAF). Please note that the Bachelor Forum is specifically designed for students who write their Bachelor Thesis at the IMAF. If you have been accepted for a Bachelor Thesis under the supervision of one of the Institute’s professors for the upcoming term, we expect you to participate in all sessions of the Bachelor Forum. In particular, it is highly important that you attend the first session, as we will explain in detail which thesis topics are available, how thesis topics will be assigned and what opportunities and requirements exist for suggesting your own topic. Topics for the bachelor thesis will only be assigned during the Bachelor Forum. Further materials will be provided in a Moodle course, which will be available one week before the first session of the Bachelor Forum. We will be happy to answer all your questions during the first session.

Inhalt: This colloquium addresses IBAE and BWL students who currently write or are about to write their bachelor thesis. This colloquium focusses on quantitative theses. We will cover: • How to develop a compelling hook and clearly articulate the motivation of the thesis, and how to integrate these effectively into the introduction. • Which research questions can and will be addressed in the thesis. • How to identify, evaluate, and structure relevant academic literature. • How to work with quantitative data, both in general and using specific tools and programming languages such as Excel, SPSS, Stata, R, and/or Python. • How to derive and articulate implications for firms, governments, or society. While focusing on these core elements, the forum is intentionally kept flexible to foster collective learning that is directly aligned with students’ individual bachelor’s thesis projects, while simultaneously allowing the forum’s content and discussions to be driven by the students themselves and the issues emerging from their own research
