Inhalt: The primary objective of this seminar is to introduce students to intercultural communication in theory and practice. A further objective is to assist students in improving their intercultural communication skills as well as in increasing their cultural sensitivity and awareness. Potential topics include: perceptions and misunderstandings, value patterns, stereotypes, identity and gender, culture shock, verbal and nonverbal communication. In addition, we will examine intercultural issues in literature and film.

Englisch/FSZ: Competencies for Communicating in a Global Context (B2/C1) (Seminar)

Inhalt: This seminar will focus on using English as a global language in professional and international contexts. Participants will have the opportunity to examine the following topics in detail: intercultural communication, marketing and advertising, gender and language use in the media as well as negotiation, motivation and problem-solving strategies. In addition, participants will gain practice in perfecting spoken and written forms of communications (presentations, e-mail, essays). Particular emphasis will be placed on topics such as communication styles, appropriate register as well as cultural and gender issues. Course materials will be compiled and made available for downloading in Material. Drew Hayden Taylor's comedy, THE BERLIN BLUES, can be purchased at Unibuch. Special Occasion: Award-winning Canadian/Ojibway playwright, Drew Hayden Taylor, will visit aswriter-in-residence in December.
