Inhalt: “...narrative in school is not something to be consumed…but something to be made by every person in every possible way.” (Rosen 1998, 168) Stories are vehicles for journeys into a world of imagination, created by language, that children can enter and enjoy. Thus sharing stories in the foreign language with your students is a central part of classroom life at primary as well as secondary level, which aims at promoting language growth, creative thinking and motivation in language learning. The structure of the course puts great emphasis on: · a balanced mix of theoretical aspects and examples from classroom practice · your active involvement and · cooperative learning. In the first part of the course I would like to give you a general overview of the topic of teaching and learning through stories in the classroom. Some of the issues I would like to introduce and discuss are: the reasons for using stories in the classroom, different types of stories, criteria for selecting stories, the role of assessment and ways of using a story. In the second part of the course you will have the opportunity to focus on an individual aspect of the topic of stories that interests you. After a critical look at the literature and the formulation of a research question in groups. You will have a choice of projects you may do with your partner(s). Choices involve: a) teaching a story, researching a question b) participant observation of a teacher doing a story in class Your reflections and findings will be part of a presentation which you are going to give at the end of the course.
