If you would like to apply for a Ger­man-lan­gua­ge ma­jor at Leuphana College, you must prove that you have sufficient knowledge of German and English.

Applicants with a foreign university entrance qualification must prove their proficiency in German language.

Certificates

Leuphana College recognises the following certificates for unrestricted admission:**

  • University entrance qualification gained at a German school in Germany or abroad
  • Feststellungsprüfung taken at Studienkolleg
  • University Degree in a German study programme (entire study programme taught in German language)

  • Goethe Certificate C2 (equal to Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom)
  • Deutsches Sprachdiplom (at least Stage 2) according to Standing Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK)
  • Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH)
  • Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (Test DaF) with a minimum score of 16 no score lower than 4 in each of the parts Listening, Reading, Hearing and Writing

The results from one of the approved tests must be included in the application or submitted to Student Services at the time of enrolment at the latest. Otherwise applicants cannot attend university. Test results must not be no older than 2 years.

Applicants must prove their proficiency in English also if they apply for a German degree programme.

English as a native language

As a native speaker you are exempt from proof of English language skills if you can present a university entrance qualification from an English-speaking school (all subjects taught in English language).

You must submit a copy of your diploma as proof. The proof must be available at the time of application. The proof can be submitted by the beginning of the lecture at the latest.

Certificates

Leuphana University of Lüneburg accepts the following certificates as proof:**

  • Internet-based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 6
  • Paper-based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language ) with a minimum score of 500
  • IELTS Academic Version (International Language Testing System) with a minimum score of 4,5
  • FCE-Test (Cambridge First Certificate in English) with a minimum of Level C
  • TOEIC Listening & Reading with a minimum score of 650 (The TOEIC Listening & Reading test is offered at Leuphana as well as a preparation course.)
  • TOEIC Speaking & Writing with a minimum score of 280

Test results must not be no older than 2 years. Students who are not able to provide proof of English language proficiency for enrolment are provisionally admitted and have until the end of the second semester to attain the necessary points for one of the above mentioned tests. If proof is not provided by this time, enrolment at university is withdrawn.

For English degree programmes

If you want to study an English-speaking major at Leuphana College, you will need proof of sufficient English language skills in addition to the valid university entrance qualification. Knowledge of German is not required.

  • FCE test (Cambridge First Certificate in English) with a minimum passing grade of A
  • TOEIC *4 skills* test with a minimum score of 850 points in Listening & Reading and a minimum score of 340 points in Speaking & Writing

The offer of English-speaking minor is limited. Currently you can study the following subsidiary subjects in English:

  • Nachhaltigkeitswissenschaften / Sustainabilty Science (DE / EN)*
  • Philosophie / Philosophy (DE / EN)*
  • Popular Music Studies
  • Psychology and Society
  • Volkswirtschaftslehre / Economics (DE / EN)*

*German-speaking minor, who can also be studied in English

If you would like to study a German-speaking minor, then you should ideally have German language skills at C1 or DSH-2 level.

Please note that a basic knowledge of German is essential for everyday life in Lüneburg, for example when looking for accommodation.
