QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON DEALING WITH THE ENERGY CRISIS

In recent years, Leuphana has already implemented very extensive measures to increase energy efficiency, save energy and use renewable energies and has been a climate-neutral university since 2014. It is also considered a pioneer among universities internationally.

Nevertheless, the potential energy crisis in the winter semester 2022/2023 also poses major challenges for Leuphana. Against the backdrop of the experiences from the Corona pandemic, Leuphana's goal is to continue to ensure its operation as an attendance university, especially out of responsibility for the academic success of its students. From Leuphana's point of view, significant restrictions on university operations must be avoided at all costs.

Detailed information on Leuphana's efforts to date as a climate-neutral university and on the planned measures to deal with the energy crisis in the winter semester 2022/2023 can be found here:

In addition, below you will find an overview of the most important questions and answers for university operations in the winter semester 2022/2023:

Will all courses take place in the winter semester 2022/23?

As things stand today, all courses at Leuphana will take place in attendance without any restrictions. As things stand, there are no plans to close the university or to convert teaching to digital formats.

Will classrooms be heated in the winter semester 2022/23?

All lecture rooms will be heated in winter to a temperature of 19°C due to the requirements of the EnSikuMaV (Ordinance on Securing the Energy Supply via Short-Term Measures).

Will offices be heated in the winter semester 2022/23?

All offices and workrooms at Leuphana will be heated in winter to a temperature of 19°C (this corresponds approximately to the setting 2-3 on thermostats) due to the requirements of the EnSikuMaV (Ordinance on Securing the Energy Supply via Short-term Measures).

Will workrooms be heated in the winter semester 2022/23?

All of Leuphana's workrooms will also be heated in winter, namely to 19°C for rooms in which physically light and predominantly sedentary activities are carried out, to 16°C for rooms in which moderately heavy activities are carried out that are mainly completed while standing or walking, and to 12°C for rooms in which physically heavy activities are carried out, based on the requirements of the EnSikuMaV (Ordinance on Securing the Energy Supply via Short-term Measures).

May additional heaters be used in offices or workrooms?

The use of individual heating devices (e.g. radiators, radiant heaters/fan heaters, etc.) or their procurement by the university's facilities and departments is not permitted. Heating offices and workrooms above the maximum temperature of 19°C is not permitted due to the federal regulation on energy conservation. Furthermore, it is not only the high power consumption of these devices that causes high costs. Also, the simultaneous operation of many direct electric heaters leads to a local grid overload and thus to power cuts in the Leuphana grid.

What do I do if I am cold in my office or workroom?

The University recommends that you bring extra clothing if needed during the upcoming heating period. The university will also provide blankets if needed. Leuphana employees also have the option of mobile working or teleworking from home to the extent approved by each individual.

Will the University's operating hours be adjusted for the autumn and winter season?

The operating hours for all rooms at Leuphana remain unchanged. Outside the operating hours, users must be prepared for lowered heating temperatures.

Are the buildings heated outside the operating hours?

Yes, the buildings are also heated outside of operating hours, but at a lower temperature level.

May I work and use my office outside the operating hours?

Of course you may work and use your office or work room outside of operating hours, but you must be prepared for further reduced temperatures outside of operating hours.

Will Leuphana buildings be closed?

As things stand today, all of Leuphana's buildings will remain accessible as usual during the university's operating hours. The exception will be a shutdown between Christmas and New Year, which the Presidential Board is currently discussing with the Staff Council. We will provide detailed information on the resulting regulations once the consultations have been completed.

Will the opening hours of the University Library change in the winter semester 2022/23?

The University Library is an important centre for teaching and research. Currently, there are no plans to restrict its operating hours. However, like other rooms at the university, the library will only be heated to 19°C during the winter semester.

Will there be a shutdown over Christmas and New Year?

The Presidium is currently in consultation with the Staff Council about an extended shutdown between Christmas and New Year. We will inform you in detail about the resulting regulations for working hours and places of work once the consultations have been completed.
