SUMMARY:Navigating the shark tank. Power Games and micropolitical competenc
 e in academia
DESCRIPTION:This workshop takes place in English on 25&26 January, 2024, be
tween 9 a.m. and 12.30 a.m. Registration is required for both parts of the
workshop.\n\nAre you navigating the ‘shark tank’ just trying to survive, do
you feel like a ‘shark’, or are you placed in a peaceful ‘goldfish pond’?
Concerning social interactions, research environments may vary a great deal
!\n\nIn Germany and elsewhere researchers are embedded in specific hierarch
ical constellations. Regardless of their position at the top, middle or low
er levels of their organization, sometimes they meet irritating and even in
comprehensible behavior and outcome: formal regulations may be bypassed, ex
pertise and institutionally defines responsibility may turn out to be unimp
ortant when decisions are taken, rival camps may impede reasonable cooperat
ion, etc. Some processes involving power games are perceived as unproductiv
e, frustrating or even annoying. However, experience also tells us that dif
ficult situations can be mastered by analyzing the dynamics of key situatio
ns and of the players’ interests involved, by skillful communication and, g
enerally, by a power-conscious approach.\n\nThe theoretical approach of mic
ropolitics and its conceptual enhancement provide a framework to systematic
ally grasp manifestations of the everyday uses of power in organizations. H
owever, micropolitics is not just about people in leadership positions or a
bout power-abuse. In fact, self-interest is pursued at all organizational l
evels and may be ethically motivated. Individual or collective strategies a
re used to exert informal influence or to avoid control by others. Of centr
al interest is the question of power resources, also from a diversity persp
ective.\n\nThe subject matter of the lecture can enrich your (virtual) tea
kitchen talks with an important shadow topic in your own organization. Abov
e all, you can deepen your understanding of the power processes and the ‘ga
mes” played in your own environment. In the workshop, moreover, you can ref
lect on your own power resources and roles in micropolitical games – as ‘vi
ctims’ or ‘agents’ – supported by a systematic and unbiased approach. You c
an identify strategies to pursue your goals more effectively and to gain pe
rspective on how to further enhance your personal micropolitical competence
