Competence and standard orientation in foreign language teaching (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Jürgen Quetz

Termin:
wöchentlich | Donnerstag | 10:15 - 11:45 | 18.10.2010 - 04.02.2011 | C 12.108 Seminarraum

Inhalt: Since the publication of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment and its adaptation to the Bildungsstandards, language teachers have started to reconsider task orientated approaches and the role of the four skills as well as of mediation in the EFL classroom. In this seminar we will look at definitions of communicative and linguistic competence (competence models like the CEF) and then foc us on assessment procedures as used in VERA 8 (Vergleichsarbeiten 8. Klasse) and other standardised tests of proficiency. The focus will be on both receptive and productive skills. We will also look at educational and political consequences of standard setting and centralised testing and portfolio assessment. Due to the language of the documents to be analysed, these sessions will be entirely in German. This course will have a Moodle backup and therefore we will not meet regularly. Please read the "Sonstige Hinweise" below!

Teaching Intercultural Competence (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Jürgen Quetz

Termin:
wöchentlich | Dienstag | 18:00 - 19:30 | 18.10.2010 - 04.02.2011 | C 4.215 Seminarraum

Inhalt: Traditional approaches to Landeskunde (area studies) were restricted to the teaching of knowledge about the other country. Teaching Intercultural Competence (ICC), however, means to help learners become aware of similarities and differences between their own and the target culture, to reflect on stereotypes and to change perspectives in order to perceive one's own and the other culture from different points of view. Recent syllabuses in national as well as international contexts (cf the Common European Framework for Languages) consider ICC as one of the main educational objectives in FLT. In this class we shall therefore look at different approaches to the teaching of ICC. We can draw on numerous video recordings from classes at Sekundarstufe I which demonstrate the wide range of practical teaching methods
